Does God Cause Sickness?
The short answer is yes, God can and does cause sickness but it’s not what you think.
Exodus 4:6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out again, his hand was white as snow with a severe skin disease.
Everything that God does or allows has a purpose behind it. Nothing is done by God without order or intent. Does God cause all diseases? No.
Job 2:4-7 Satan replied to the Lord, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!”
“All right, do with him as you please,” the Lord said to Satan. “But spare his life.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.
As we see with Job, Satan can also cause disease but the difference is he has ill intentions, God does not.
I Bring These Two Examples to Demonstrate Purpose.
In the example with Moses, God caused his hand to have a skin disease to show Pharaoh who He is pertaining to the release His people in Egypt.
How can God demonstrate His healing power without sickness? How can God demonstrate goodness without evil? Should we only accept the good things from God and never anything bad as Job stated in chapter 2 verse 10? We need a comparison to understand the opposite of something else. Even though God allowed Satan to cause devastation to Job, He used that for a purpose as well.
Something Satan cannot and will not do is heal you.
Exodus 15:26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all His decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”
Sometimes disobedience to commands can inflict disease. Of course, not all sickness and disease are a result of direct disobedience as we read with the man that was born blind in John 9:3 (“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him"). The Exodus scripture gives us four things that we can do to avoid certain tragedies that are a direct result of disobedience as exemplified by the Egyptians:
1. Listen carefully to the voice of God.
2. Do what is right in His sight.
3. Obey His commands.
4. Keep all His decrees.
The Hebrew word for heal is rapha which also means to make whole or restoration. Not only can God provide physical healing but most of all, He desires to provide complete healing of the soul (heart, mind, and will) and body. He wants to heal us from the inside out. Before the fall of Adam and Eve, we were walking in wholeness. Unfortunately, disobedience stepped in through sin and sickness came as a result. There will come a day when God will provide His children complete restoration and healing that will make our body, soul, and spirit whole again. Sickness is not the end, complete healing and restoration are.
Psalms 103: 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.
