Your Conscience Proves God’s Existence

“Whether what happened next was the product of intentional malevolent manipulation or the unfortunate workings of ignorance is hard to tell. My own sense is that one aided the other, as those who stand to gain from the manipulation of truth often prey on those bereft of critical thinking.”

This quote is taken from Maria Popova, who wrote about the unfortunate events of Johannes Kepler. Kepler was a physicist and mathematician, who was coined as perhaps one of the greatest scientists to live. Last week, I posted a discussion about why Jesus Christ is indeed God in the flesh. You can read about it here. I understand that there are approximately 450-500 million atheists or agnostics in the world according to the Oxford Handbook of Atheism. So, why not take a stab of doing some critical thinking about God’s existence?

Many non-believers believe in the theory of evolution. Evolution, as many of us are taught in grade school, is the idea that all species are related and gradually change over time. This is made possible through natural selection. This phenomenon dictates organisms produce offspring that can survive in their environment and those that cannot survive will eventually die off.

One of the earliest accounts of the theory of evolution came from the Greek philosopher, Anaximander of Miletus. He believed that man originated from fish because humans must have descended from some type of superior species who can survive without any assistance when they are born. That superior species are fish because when fish hatch eggs, the offsprings are independent of their parents.

Ironically, Anaximander also believed that the origin of the universe is held together and created from something (Someone rather) infinite and not from a material element. This early evolutionist concluded that eternal and infinite motion is the cause for our infinite world and how it came into being. He states that the world is not eternal and will be destroyed back into apeiron (the Greek word for infinite or unlimited), where the new worlds will be created. This is actually in the Bible if you did not know.

Anyways,

Evolutionists assert that all species have a “universal common ancestor.” Creation was created by one Creator. The common denominator is God. I doubt that I descended from a chimpanzee or a fish. One of the most marvelous things that separate man from animals is the human conscience. Conscience is described as the innate ability of a human being to be aware of wrongdoing or being sensitive to the moral goodness of one’s behavior. Synonyms include standards, values, inner voice, and ethics. It is interesting how the human mind, emotions, and will interact with its conscience.

The similarities between humans and animals include physical bodies, intellect, emotions, and behaviors, but not conscience. Human beings also have a higher level of thought processes, emotions, and behaviors than animals do. After all, I do not see animals training humans, constructing buildings from a blueprint, developing and maintaining relationships across different animal species, or gaining a sense of purpose from helping others.

Many research scientists suggest that even babies have a basic understanding of right and wrong. I have seen toddlers purposefully and willfully do the wrong thing just to elicit a specific response suggesting that they know the difference. There is a human instinct to prefer good and right over evil and wrong. Do you love it when bad things happen to you or the people close to you?

Additionally, animals do not struggle internally with a conscience as humans do. For example, humans wrestle with various thoughts of reasoning and emotions before and after deciding to do the right or wrong thing. We are agonized with guilt when we violate our conscience before we are even caught. Guilt alone can affect a person mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is often said that a serial killer has a dead conscience. This is because after repeatedly doing wrong and evil, they have increasingly become desensitized.

The more you violate your conscience, the less sensitive you become morally.

Animals do not have the impression of guilt like humans do that drives them to either hide or admit what they have done. Although dogs may look shameful when they have done something wrong, they have learned certain behaviors are undesirable due to the owner’s current or past reactions. Maybe the 1-2% difference between chimpanzees and humans is the fact that chimpanzees are not expected to live by the moral characteristics of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in order to benefit themselves and other members of society.

Why distinguish man from animals with moral standards and ethics if we were all just one anyways? Who would do such a thing?
