How to Experience God Transform Your Life
James 1:22 NLT
But Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
In this Scripture, James perfectly and clearly lays out the key to seeing the blessing of God in our lives. Many of us complain when we see others living their best life in Jesus. We say, “Why isn’t God doing the same for me?” We follow the same routine of sitting in church, listening to sermons, and going about our business. There are three strategies to not staying stagnant in life and actually living out how God intended you to live.
How many of us are stopping at just listening to God’s word, if that? We listen to God’s Word and somehow it has no effect in our life. The Word is living and active. Applying an active Word must mean it has to bring about change. The first thing you have to do beyond listening to the Word is REFLECT:
James said when you listen and do not obey, it is like looking at a mirror and forgetting how you look like. A mirror is meant to reflect your image. This is why he says you have to look carefully. When you have crust in your eye, do you refuse to fix yourself after looking in the mirror? This is exactly what you are doing if you read or listen to the Word of God and do not examine what it is trying to tell you about your life. The Word of God is like a mirror reflecting your image. You have to look carefully by taking the time out to study and reflect on what it is trying to tell you. Do not just bypass what you are reading. The Word has many layers to unravel. Take the time to ask the Holy Spirit what He wants you to understand and do further research.
The next step is to live a life of REPENTANCE. Now, when you hear the word “repent” it is often associated with a negative connotation. Keeping repentance as a lifestyle is actually good for you and is called a privilege in the Bible. To learn more, check out the video down below. Repenting helps us to realize our mistakes, learn lessons, and keeps us under God’s protection. Do not find yourself out of God’s will because you refuse to have a repentant heart.
The last and most pivotal step to seeing change in your life is OBEDIENCE. The perfect law that sets you free lives inside your heart. Living by the voice of the Holy Spirit and obeying Him is absolutely necessary. When God tells you to do or not to do something, you have to make sure you listen AND obey. Every step of obedience to God can lead to the pathway of His blessings. We are not going to see it if we refuse to listen.
Do not remain complacent in life. Complacency makes no room for change or improvement. The Word is active, which means you should be actively participating in it. Following God is not full of empty routines that produce no results. He doesn't ask you of things that He cannot pay back 10x's over. God has perfect timing as to when He wants to issue out His blessings.
"We often complain that God is too slow, but could it be our refusal to reflect, repent, and obey may be delaying the process?"
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
