The Definition of Insanity
Repeating the same behavior over again and expecting a different result- The definition of insanity.
They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved. They even spoke against God himself, saying, “God can’t give us food in the wilderness. Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”
When the Lord heard them, he was furious. The fire of his wrath burned against Jacob. Yes, his anger rose against Israel, for they did not believe God or trust him to care for them.
The psalmist is referring to a time when God was leading Israel out of Egypt through the wilderness and to the promise land. God had released Israel out of the hands of their oppressors in mighty ways and was supplying for their needs day-by-day. But there was one huge problem. They kept committing the same sins over and over again.
Reading how Israel fell back into idol worship even though they encountered the living God was astonishing to me. We are susceptible to doing the same thing. We beg God to take us out of circumstances and when He does, we go back to the same sins. It’s like we have spiritual amnesia and forget everything God has done for us. This is a huge mistake because it leaves us wide open to the consequences of our sins.
Another huge mistake is undermining God’s ability. As you can see in the above scripture, this actually made God furious. They underestimated God’s ability to care for them because of their lack of trust and belief. I have been there and this passage convicted me really quickly. God gave them bread from heaven and rained down meat. He can do more than what we can ask for or imagine but we have to stop doubting Him. Do not fail the same test over and over again and expect different results. If you say you trust and believe IN God then you have to prove it with your heart. Do not just say it with your words and when unfavorable circumstances happen, your actions tell a different story. God is checking for your heart posture.
There are 3 key strategies for passing your "trust test" with God.
1. Reflect on what He has already done for you.
2. Rebuke the doubts and challenge them with God's word.
3. Talk to God and wait for Him to answer.
You will continue to be in the same deadly cycle unless you decide to do something different.
