The Truth About “New” Age Spirituality

John 10:10

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

In the verse above, Jesus is referring to the thief as Satan. If you are familiar with the character of Satan then you know he distorts things that are of God and makes it his own. His biggest deception is not to lead people into obvious sin, but to lead people into evil disguised as good. It would be too easy if Satan tried to entice you with obvious sin. He has to mix a little bit of truth with his lies in order to get people to fall into his trap. Otherwise, you wouldn’t do certain things if it were obviously erroneous, correct?

Ecclesiastes 1:9

History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.

There is nothing “new” about New Age Spirituality (NAS). NAS is a religious movement that gained traction in the occult and metaphysical (supernatural) communities during the 1970s and 80s.

The concept of NAS is based on looking forward to the new era of love, light, personal transformation, and healing. The origins came from Helena Petron Blavatsky. She was a Russian spiritualist who announced the coming of the New Age. She believed that members of mystical brotherhood (perfected beings of greater power (aka demons) who spread spiritual knowledge through selected humans) guided the destiny of the world. Her successor, Annie Besant, believed the coming messiah or savior was an Indian teacher named Jiddu Krishnamurti. Doesn’t a coming messiah sound familiar to you? His real name is Jesus Christ.

Practices of New Age Spirituality include:

  • Astrology (gaining divine information from celestial movements)

  • Tarot cards (gaining divine information from interpreting cards)

  • Physic readings (gaining divine information from the use of senses)

  • Astral projection (training your soul to travel outside your body aka intentional out of body experiences)

  • Crystal healing (therapy that involves drawing out negative energies through gemstones)

  • Channeling spirits (allowing a spirit entity to enter your body and speak through you aka demonic possession)

  • Numerology (divine connection between numbers and coinciding events)

Leviticus 20:6 “I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead.”

Deuteronomy 18: 10-12 And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or physics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.

The supernatural world is very real. Spiritual beings include God, Satan, Satan’s unholy henchmen, and holy angels (servants of God). Take into consideration that demons are fallen angels.

The three spiritual practices that are often distorted and can become deceitful include meditation, manifestation, and mediumship.

Joshua 1:8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.

This is a technique some use to clear their mind and release themselves from conscious thinking by chanting or focusing on something specific. Meditation plays a large role in Buddhism and Hinduism beliefs. This is also practiced in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The promise to this practice is to bring peace, clarity, and enlightenment. The issue is God does not call us to empty our minds. He instructs us to protect and guard our mind and to also be sober-minded.

Most New Agers who practice meditation believe that they are their own god and can manifest things in their life via meditation. God does call us to meditate but to meditate on His Word. Reported side effects of the types of meditation that requires you to reach a state of self-consciousness include elevated sensory perception, panic, detachment, and loss of motivation. Why would you want to empty your mind if this is where the enemy can attack you?

2 Corinthians 11:3-4

But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Manifestation is about creating the desires of your heart, believing it will happen, and aligning your thoughts and actions to bring your desires into reality. This has been seriously corrupted to the point where people are manifesting money, a job, a spouse, cars, houses, success, and fame. These are all empty pursuits that focus on materialism and pleasing your flesh rather than seeking God’s will for your life. Manifestation is linked to the law of attraction which is based on the power of the universe drawing positive and good energies to you if you focus enough.

Oddly enough, I do not see people manifesting world peace, food for the poor, shelter for the homeless, or unity. That is because it is all about wants and selfish ambitions. The funny thing is, people who practice manifestation love to say it is biblical because of Mark 11:24 when Jesus says “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” This verse is often taken out of context and portrays God to be a spiritual genie. This scripture speaks of praying with confidence. Does that mean God will literally give you every single thing you wish for? No. Jesus says this verse after describing having enough faith to move mountains. Did He mean literal mountains? No! He is referring to mountains that represent seemingly impossible situations or problems and having enough confidence in God to help you overcome these mountains.

James 3:15

For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered. Whatever they did in their lifetime-loving, hating, envying-is all long gone. They no longer play a part in anything here on earth.

A medium is a person who connects with spirit guides, “angels”, and the dead. They receive information from “spiritual energies” by impressions of the mind with thoughts, seeing, feelings, and intuition (a knowing). Mediums are often used to communicate a message to family members who lost a loved one. If the Bible says that the dead know nothing and no longer play a part in anything on earth, then how are mediums able to communicate with the dead? The spirit guides or angels they are communicating with are actually demons in disguise.

Demons spend a lot of time monitoring you and your behaviors. They seemingly are able to predict the future or know certain things about you because they spend time watching you. They are referred to as monitoring or familiar spirits. This is why they can tell you about your past, present, and “predict” the future. One thing that we need to get straight is that only God knows the future and only God knows our thoughts. Demons do not know anything other than what God has allowed them to know in the spirit realm. Ironically, the Holy Spirit also communicates to believers by spiritually hearing, seeing, knowing, and feeling.

Do you see how the enemy copies God and distort things for his own evil purposes?

I hope this post stops you dead in your tracks if you partake in any of these practices. I pray that the Holy Spirit convicts you as you turn away from these short cuts. These things do not come from God and have the purpose of drawing you further away from Him. Distorted techniques of connecting with the supernatural are trying to make you turn to everywhere else but God your needs. The deception of the enemy is to make you believe that everything is fine until you become legally tormented either here on earth or eternally.

Proverbs 26:2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

If the opposite of the above verse is true, then a deserved curse will fall on its intended victim.

I implore you to check out the testimonies of people who have practiced these things only for it to go horribly wrong. Divination is a sin and God will allow you to choose your sins over Him. Do not let the enemy bait you with the desires of your heart. God wants you to come to Him to fill your voids not resort to practices that look good but are filled with evil deception. Remember it is sin to know the right thing to do and to not do it anyways.

1 Peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
