Intrusive Thoughts Series: Idolatry
Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected- even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.”
God is the original Creator of everything on this earth, in the heavens, and in the universe. Whatever you put above God is called idolatry. Anything can be an idol such as money, cars, clothes, other people, or yourself.
The only person that is deserving of your worship (the highest affections of your heart) is God. We worship God for who He is and not what He can do for us. It is about the Creator, not the created things.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I realize that you are the creator of all things and no one deserves the highest affections of my heart but you. Today I am choosing to put you first in my life no matter what temptation is presented. I know that nothing in life will be able to fully satisfy and sustain me but you.
Help me to release any influences that may be preventing me from serving you wholeheartedly. Thank you for loving me beyond what anything in this world could ever love me. Thank you for creating me due to your everlasting love.
In Jesus name, Amen
Revelations 4:11- “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.”
There are several blog posts in this series that you can check out with examples of thoughts that you may be battling with and how to counteract them with scripture and prayer.
